Post Post subject: WHO’S THIS ALL FOR?
After the game on Sunday, I was lost for words and hurt, this defeat really bit hard and deep. I was full of self doubt and if you didn’t notice I failed to give my usual after match talk. I have been with the majority of these lads for over a year now and personally thought we had grown as a unit. I honestly believed that our side would be a match for this high flying Matlock outfit and for the biggest part of the first half we were. I was so disappointed that I considered quitting because I know the answers to our problems but doubt whether I can cure them.

We took the game to them and looked very confident but it soon became apparent when we went behind that there was something lacking. Now this something is an attitude that I don’t believe can be taught, but has to be found deep down inside each individual child by themselves. This is the want to win the battle to fight for the right to be victorious. We yet again were found wanting when put in this situation and were second to the ball and rarely won the second challenge. We do have a few lads who can achieve this but most of our team don’t have that battle.

Now the word responsibility is a very big word for a ten year old I do agree but this is what is needed by some of our players, too many of our players stand and watch and expect somebody else to make that vital tackle or clearance. All the best sides have these players who thrive on responsibility, but to my players, they seem to come across as too arrogant. These players even though I consider a bad trait in a child of that age deserve the right to be *beep*, big headed, arrogant what ever you want to call it because they have worked hard at their game.

How do we come across this hurdle. Well this is why I require help from both the parents and players. We have to find away to get this battle, this will to win out of our players. Secondly we need to keep our discipline by keeping our positions when things start to go wrong and dig deep and find that little bit extra that is required. We need to keep focused and keep our concentration through out the game.

Now the main reasons our children play football is enjoyment. We know, no matter what the result these lads love every second of it. At times, the parents and most definitely me get rather upset by the result. We all want to win and this is our ultimate aim. We have a fantastic little set up with a great bunch of parents who want the best for their children. It is very important that we keep things in perspective and don’t over pressurize these boys. Enjoyment is the name of the game.

We have to remember even though we would love our boys to win things, this is for them and not for our own ego’s. Lets hope we can help them find this battle but if that comes at the price of losing the enjoyment I would personally rather keep coming second even though it hurts.

Remember this is not my side but our side and if anybody doesn’t agree with my views or my coaching methods please let me know. I am a very approachable guy and would appreciate any constructive input.

I would like to wish all, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and hope Santa brings us that battle.
